Chiefs Talking Staff Joe Wilson

Native Carving - Chiefs talking Staff by Joe Wilson C2007

Native Totems - Chiefs talking Stick by Joe Wilson C2007

Here is a exquisite piece, this Four figure Chiefs talking stick with the Eagle being the top figure then the Killer Whale or Orca then the Grizzly Bear holding the Salmon and finely the Dzunukwa or Wild Women of the woods holding the Copper

The Talking staff measures 75 inches in height by 4 inches wide by 5 inches in depth. The total length of the figures is 57 inches with all the detail deeply carved including the tail feathers of the Eagle.

The Bald Eagle is one of the most important beings in there art and mythology, it is also traditionally the most prominent of there Crests. The Eagle is associated to the Pursuit of Freedom and is reverted as a powerful hunter.

The Killer Whale is associated with strength, dignity, prosperity and longevity.

Bear is one of the most prevalent figures in crest and shamanic art, as well as in myths. It is considered to be a close relation of humankind, perhaps because of physical characteristics such as size, appearance, and expression, and behaviors such as sanding on two hind legs, gathering plants and berries, fishing and nurturing young.

Dzunuk’wa guards and protects her children, who are all creatures and spirits of the forest. Human children who wander are likely to be captured by her and thrown into the basket on her back, especially if they are stupid enough to eat the food with which she tempts them. As a spirit connected with wealth and coppers in particular, Dzunuk’wa’s image may be worn by a Kwakwaka’wakw chief at Copper breaking and potlatch closing ceremonies. On these occasions, the mask is called Geekumhl, and may be endowed with a masculine, warrior like nature.
