Thunder bird is very important to the Kwakwaka’wakw, who in legendary times made a deal with the powerful supernatural bird, named for his habit of causing thunder and lightning. He is large and strong enough to hunt Killer Whale.
Here is a great example of Trevor Hunt's work in both carving and his great design. Carved from a solid piece of old growth Red Cedar this massive panel measuring 48 inches round and 1 1/2 inches deep has multiple layers carved into it with the carving up to 3/4" in depth.
